Poem 27. Who Am I?

Who Am I ?

When,
I looked into the mirror,
 looking back,was a woman .
Asked her "who are you ?"
She replied ,"You,
yourself"

Then,
came,my husband ;
asked him to take a look.
"Do you know who this is?"
Smiled, answered
"why,you my
wife".

Then,
 my children, up called
asked whether they knew her.
They said "you,our
mummy".

I wandered ,
with this question,
"Do you know who I am?"
No two answers where the same,
and I was really confused so.
Who am I really?

Am I,
what I think I am?
Or am I what others think I am?
Am I different from all these?
Who is the real,
:
:
:
?

There is no such thing as "the self" - only the selected fictions that we present to those around us. Your poem explores this idea very cleverly.

Or is there an I which is different?

There is in my book! :) It's the one that makes you ask the question in the first place.

The I is ever-evolving, therefore, difficult to find because at the next moment it is no longer as it was a moment ago.

I understand the enigma. I do think, however, that only YOU can determine who the real you is. Thought provoking.

Nice Magpie - and a good question that we all come to sooner or later. We know instinctively that we are more than our roles...

I really love this poem...Are we defined by our many roles as woman or are we simply women giving definition to our roles?

I guess we are like this poem !! Reflection of our self and others' thoughts combined :)

Loved this poem !!

I really loved this, probably because I face those same questions myself. It seems that sometimes we lose ourselves as we become what others label us.

Interesting!A single person seems to be different for different types of relations...Enjoyed it!

A mother easily forgets herself because her time and efforts go to children, husband, family, friends. I remember when my children grew up and how I wondered about the very same thing. Who am I now? Your poem brings it all back.
